Research Critical Analysis Self-Assessment

When Research Critical Analysis was first introduced, I had a clear idea that I wanted to write about Appearance vs. Reality in Othello, one of the most famous tragedies written by William Shakespeare, and connect it with real world situations, but when I proposed it to my professors the FIQWS 10008 professor was skeptical about it, so I came up with the idea of comparing the old version of Supergirl with the most recent one and show how her character evolved with time. It has been a challenging assignment but overall, I believe I did a good job on persuading my thesis to the audience and to fully express all the rhetorical strategies and devices I learned this semester.

My strongest aspects in the Research Critical Analysis are historical background information that I give throughout my paragraphs, and the way how I connected them with Supergirl and how they affected her character. The purpose of my research was to show how Supergirl’s character evolved and changed public’s view of her with time and to reinforce women’s roles in the society by connecting the show and her character to current social issues such as feminism. Since there are not many female superheroes in the comic books and films, it was hard to find reliable and credible sources to support my thesis, however I tried my best to choose the most vivid evidences and fully explain them. The lack of sources on female superheroes, specifically Supergirl, gave me a hard time on building a strong counterclaim but after long researches I found an article, “CBS’s New ‘Supergirl’ Show Is Pissing Some People Off – And That’s A Good Thing!” by Meghan O’Keefe, disfavoring the Supergirl TV show which helped me to create a persuasive counter argument.

I don’t consider peer reviewing very helpful in this assignment because I did not receive enough feedback to help me improve my paper. However, the use of technology, Blackboard, and the office hours with my professors helped me a lot. The feedback I got from my FIQWS 10108 professor, Janelle Poe, through Blackboard and from my FIQWS 10008 professor, David Crohn, during the office hours made me realize how I can improve my research paper and make it more arguable and persuasive. Since I had to submit the Research Critical Analysis to both of my English professor, getting feedback from both helped me understand what my professors expect from me and I tried to focus on those points.

I am aware that my grammar is not strong, and it will affect me negatively in this Research Critical Analysis, but I tried my best to avoid grammar mistakes. Hopefully my thesis is well argued, and I achieve my purpose to persuade it to the audience, fans of Supergirl and everyone who enjoys reading and knowing more about comics and help somehow to empower women and demonstrate to the audience their roles in our society.
